{appearance; At 6'3" with a lean but muscular frame and an often dour expression, Jasper can present an intimidating presence. His honey-blonde hair is fairly long and holds a certain amount of wave. He has strong cheekbones and a narrow chin. Though rarely seen outside of his immediate family, Jasper has a brilliant smile. His eyes range in color from deep black when he is hungry or angry to a warm, almost caramel shade, a side effect of his "vegetarian" diet.
True to his Texan roots, Jasper prefers jeans and cowboy boots. He always wears long sleeve shirts or sweaters, usually with a light jacket. His clothing of choice is for the most part a means to hide the crescent-shaped scars that cover the majority of his body. The battle scars are a constant reminder of the unending war he faced for almost the first century of his existence beyond human life.
{history; Jasper Monroe Whitlock was born near Houston, Texas on December 26, 1843. When he was almost seventeen he joined the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Always charismatic, Jasper quickly rose to the rank of Major. After overseeing the evacuation of women and children from Galveston to Houston, he made to return to join the battle when he came upon three young women outside the city. The leader of the three, a small Mexican girl named Maria, took a quick liking to the tall, compelling soldier and decided she wanted him for her own army.
Maria had seen great potential in Jasper and she was not disappointed. Soon after his transformation he was given the responsibility of training other newborns in the art of war. It was quickly discovered that he had the ability to sense and manipulate the emotions of others. The talent was useful in keeping Maria’s volatile army of newborns from killing each other before they could be useful to her. As part of Jasper’s responsibilities as general of the newborn army, he was charged to destroy those who had outlived their usefulness. Over the decades he grew weary of his existence though he knew of no other way. To make matters worse, Jasper began to sense a change in Maria in regards to him. He eventually came to believe that she would turn on him. While the thought was loathsome, he was resigned to the probability that he would have to destroy the woman he had spent decades worshipping.
Fortunately, another opportunity was presented at just the right time. Peter, a former lieutenant who had escaped with his newborn mate, came to Jasper with the alternative that he sought. He left the only life he knew for what he hoped would be a more enjoyable existence. Finding a world beyond war was an improvement but there were far deeper issues at work. Despite the more peaceful way of life, he would battle with deep bouts of depression. Concerned for his friend, Peter eventually traced the pattern. The lowest points always coincided with Jasper feeding and he finally realized that it was the sense of feeling his victim’s emotions as they died that was tearing at what was left of his soul.
After only a couple of years he left the company of Peter and Charlotte, still searching for a better way. He was in Philadelphia, out during a cloudy day, though he was still uncomfortable with the risk of daytime excursions, when a rain shower forced him to duck into a half-empty dinner. Jasper had barely cleared the threshold when a tiny, black-haired woman jumped down off her stool and walked straight up to him as one might a long-lost friend. Alice reached out to him and he took her hand without reservation and never looked back. With her he found hope and love, things he always believed were out of his reach.
Using Alice's visions as their guide the pair followed a path to find the coven of vampires known as the Cullens. With her help and the support of a new family, Jasper was able to make the transition to the "vegetarian" diet. There have been a few bumps in the road, most recently during Bella's eighteen-birthday party when she suffered a paper cut. The well of blood from her finger was enough to set off his bloodlust and it took most of the family to keep him from reaching his target. Fearful of hurting the young woman he had come to care for very deeply Jasper left Forks and the family followed. Some time later he returned to Forks to find Bella wrapped in a deep depression. Guilt over his actions as well as his still growing feelings prompted Jasper to take up a vigil to assure that Bella would be safe.
Despite his best efforts and those of Jacob Black, Bella was bitten once again but no one was there to stop her transformation the second time. Jasper never left her side during the entire three days the venom worked through her body, holding her hand, talking and singing to her softly as a distraction against the pain, though she seemed in less pain than he had expected. When Bella awoke to her new life Jasper was there for her, helping her in every way he could while she adjusted to being a vampire. In short order he came to feel Bella's love and now they are free to start a new life together.
{personality; Relatively new to the vegetarian lifestyle in terms of his lifespan, Jasper battles constantly with his inner demons when in close contact with humans. Decades of unrestrained feeding left him lacking the self-control that the rest of his family exhibits effortlessly. Jasper tends to keep to the fringe, content in the shadows, never seeking out the spotlight until his unique knowledge will be of benefit. He can be a calming presence for others even in the midst of his own internal struggles. He is protective of all his family, fiercely so now when it comes to Bella.
To the outside world, Jasper appears intimidating and unapproachable. This is partly due to a concerted effort to keep humans at a safe distance so they don't tempt his self-control. Another factor is the difficulty he faces being in a constant shroud of emotion. Jasper senses the feelings of everyone around him, many of whom are teenagers with rather dark emotions about themselves and others. In addition his past has left some deep emotional, as well as physical, scars.
To the world at large, Jasper is a silent observer and a brooding loner who only associates with his family. To his family, he can be a warm, calm and loving man, who would walk through fire for the people he loves. In their presence he can loosen the stringent hold he keeps on himself and can be carefree and even playful. Of course that is something that those outside his inner circle will likely never witness first hand. Deep down in his heart Jasper is a true Southern gentleman.
